FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: SOUTHWESTERN MICHIGAN TOURIST COUNCIL'S MILLICENT HUMINSKY TAKES TOP CONVENTION & VISITOR BUREAU HONORS AT PURE MICHIGAN GOVERNOR'S CONFERENCE: DRIVING TOURISM 2010 Benton Harbor, MI - Millicent Huminsky, executive director of the Southwestern Michigan Tourist Council, was awarded the Convention and Visitors Bureau (CVB) Star of the Year award at a special recognition dinner, May 6, at the Pure Michigan Governor's Conference: Driving Tourism 2010. The annual convention, co-sponsored by the Michigan Lodging & Tourism Association, Travel Michigan and Michigan State University, is Michigan's largest and only all-industry educational and networking event. Several hundred hospitality and tourism leaders, tourism industry decision makers and tourism promotional leaders were in attendance May 6-7 at the Grand Hotel, Mackinac Island, Mich. Huminsky was nominated and awarded Michigan's top CVB honor by her industry peers. She was recognized for her advocacy and promotion of the tourism and hospitality industry in Michigan for more than two decades. Her leadership at the Southwestern Michigan Tourism Council, which promotes tourism in Berrien, Cass and Van Buren Counties, has helped to make the southwest corner of the state a gateway to thousands of visitors and tourists annually. Among Huminsky's and the council's accomplishments are a new Web site, www.swmichigan.org, that promotes tourist council members and events; support for the development and collaborative promotion of the region's newer attractions, Harbor Shores Resort & Jack Nicklaus Signature Golf Course; Silver Beach Center which includes the interactive Whirlpool Compass Fountain, Silver Beach Carousel, Shadowland on Silver Beach and Curious Kids' Discovery Zone; the outdoor community art exhibits in St. Joseph, Mich., and Four Winds Casino, New Buffalo, Mich. Huminsky and her council are also active promoters of Southwestern Michigan's wine country and agri-tourism and she has been named to the recently launched Michigan Culinary Tourism Alliance to help establish the state as a destination for culinary travel experiences. In addition to these efforts, Huminsky looks for opportunities to build partnerships to promote the area. An example of this is Michigan Beachtowns, an organization which includes nine convention and visitors bureaus along Lake Michigan. In giving Huminsky the Star CVB of the Year Award, the Governor's Conference attendees praised Southwestern Michigan's growth and vitality as a tourism destination. It was noted that agriculture and tourism are the state's second and third largest industries and both are strongly represented in Southwestern Michigan.
